Think of It Like a Building
Your feet are the structural foundation of everything above them. What starts at the ground doesn't stay only at the ground.
If the slab a building sits on is uneven or unsupported, every floor above it is affected including the walls, the framing, the roof. Your feet work the same way. When the arches collapse or the ankles roll inward, that mechanical shift travels upward through the knees, hips, pelvis, and all the way into the spine. Flat flip flops pass that impact straight through and over thousands of steps on a summer day, this adds up to significant cumulative stress on the knees, hips, and spine.

Flip flops change the way you walk. You grip with your toes, shorten your stride, and alter your natural gait pattern. This compensatory movement ripples upward, changing how load is distributed through the hips and lumbar spine with every step. Over a full summer, a substantial amount of abnormal loading occurs on a system which likely already has underlying structural shifts.

Take a look at your shoes and your feet:
Your shoe soles wear unevenly. For example, more on the inside or outside edge. Your feet point outward, especially one more than the other, when you walk or stand naturally. You notice low back or hip discomfort that increases after long days on your feet. Knee or hip discomfort flares in summer but eases when you're back in supportive shoes. You can see flat or dropped arches when you look at your wet footprint on pavement or tile.
Any one of these on its own is worth noting, but several together suggest your foot mechanics are in need of an evaluation.

Look for summer footwear that includes meaningful arch support and a contoured footbed. Reserve flat flip flops for short wear, like poolside, the beach, the locker room, rather than all-day use.
